Zucchini for children’s garden

One of the easiest things to grow in your garden is zucchini. If you have young kids, aside from green beans, this is one of the best plants for children to plant because it is fast growing and fast bearing. It germinates fast so the kids can see within a few days the plantling break through the ground. You can see the leaves and stalks grow a measurable length daily. My girls did this and would actually bring out a measuring stick to see how much their plants grew in a day.
There is much to be learned in the garden. I found talking about sex becomes second nature when you incorporate plant reproduction in your explanation. For instance, zucchinis have male and female flowers. Did you know that? Look at your zucchini plant next time and you’ll notice that some plants have flowers with just a straight stem and some of the flowers have a little fruit ball already forming at the base. During our many conversations in the garden about sex, my very astute (or it could be smart ass) daughter said, “ah, so that is where they got the birds and the bees metaphor! duh!
